Sometimes it takes the raw honesty of a child to remind us what really matters in life. This story about six year old Shane and his ten year old pet dog is a touching example of just how special a family pet can be…
When Tom the veterinarian diagnosed a ten year pet dog by the name of Belker with cancer, the family were hoping for a miracle. Ron and his wife Lisa loved the gentle giant and their son Shane had grown up with Belker right by his side.
After breaking the devastating news to the family and explaining to them that there was no hope of recovery, Tom offered to put Belker out of his pain and perform the euthanasia procedure in the privacy and comfort of their home.
As Tom prepared his equipment, Ron and Lisa decided it would be good for six year old Shane to watch his beloved dog depart in the hope that he might learn something from the experience. They explained what was going to happen and as Tom observed Shane calmly embracing his old pet for the last time, he wondered whether or not the composed six year old understood what was going on.
Within minutes, Belker was at peace and Shane appeared to accept his passing without sadness, distress or confusion. It was only later when the adults were discussing the heartbreakingly short life of animals that Shane shed some light on his amazingly calm attitude.
“I know why” he piped up.
What came out of his mouth next continues to astonish Tom to this day.
“People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life – like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right? Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.”
These profound words from the mouth of someone so young are truly touching and demonstrate just how valuable a pet dog can be to the development of a young child.
Not only are they loving and loyal companions but they can also teach us about life and remind us that at the end of the day, the most important thing is love.
